Children Slip and Fall Injuries in Bath Tubs

08.03.09

Each year, more than 40,000 children are involved in some type of slip and fall injury in a bathtub or shower. Other associated injuries that result from children being in the bathtub are burns from hot water, drowning fatalities or near drowning experiences. This new research study published by the Pediatrics medical journal highlights the frequency of the slip and falls encountered by children under the age of 18. Researches examined the number of children injured in such accidents who required serious treatment at a New Jersey hospital.
Children under the age of 2 were held more accountable for bathtub or bathroom slip and fall injuries.  Over 60% of all bath and shower slip and fall accidents involved children between the ages of 4 and under.
When helping your child bathe, it is important to carefully watch for any slippery surfaces, or to hold onto your child in such a way that he or she does not easily fall.
Although most of the slip and fall accidents happened at home, other cases have occured in other locations such as hotels or resorts. It is a hotels’ duty to properly furnish a bathrooms’ amenities, such as a bathtub rug, so as to prevent a slip and fall accident.
Manufacturers may also need to ensure proper safety of their bathroom units, for example, by installing anti-slip grips on bathtub flooring. This may enforce higher friction on slip resistance, thereby reducing the possibility of a dangerous slip and fall.
